Waste Not Want Not

Cheaper, safer, cleaner than ever. Spending too much on household cleaners, many of which are loaded with toxic substances. You can make an all purpose cleaner by mixing water, baking soda and vinegar together and store it in an old mason or jelly jar.

Additional recipes for all kinds of cleaners are available at www.treehugger.com. You can save yourself at least $250 a year!

Water in short supply but in high demand. Save gallon after gallon in the bathroom alone.
There are all kinds of steps that you can take, such as taking shorter showers and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. The best of all-time favorite way to save water is to put a brick in your toilet trick. Just take a brick and put it in the tank. If you put the brick in there, you will save approximately a third of a gallon every time you flush. Estimate 8% of your water costs.

Power (Non) Play- Electric bills skyrocketing because of constantly plugged in gadgets.
The best product on the market is called the "smart" power strip that has multiple outlets for your game consoles and desktops and the energy sucking plasma TV's. Best price that I found is through www.amazon.com. Search smart strip.

Save Money on Your Auto Insurance

Reduce Coverage on Older Vehicles

If your car is old and paid for, consider eliminating your collision coverage. This is the coverage that pays for any damage that you cause to your own vehicle, and it makes up a big portion of your insurance cost.

Use One Insurance Company

Group all of your insurance policies – auto, home/renters, etc. – at one insurance company, and you'll earn a multi-line discount, good for up to 10% off of your total premium.

Raise Your Deductible

Slash your auto premium drastically by raising your deductible – the amount you pay out of pocket when you make a claim. The difference between a $250 deductible and a $500 deductible is usually quite substantial, and the difference between a $250 deductible and a $1,000 deductible, even more so. Decide how much you can afford to spend out of pocket, and then adjust your deductible accordingly.

Get a Quote Before You Buy

Before buying a new vehicle, call your insurance agent to find out how much it's going to cost to insure the vehicle. Premiums can vary widely based on the make, model and year of a vehicle.

Free Personalized Advice for Saving Money On...

Credit Cards, Wireless Plans and Gas Stations.

Today I found this terrific site that allows you to input a little of your personal information and it calculates your "personal" savings. I filled out the gas stations part. All I did was give my auto model, make, year and zip and it told me where I can get the best gas prices. The top choice for my vehicle, a 2009 Honda CR-V 4 wheel drive was Costco.

I always buy my gas from Costco! I will definitely continue. I love to save money. It makes it a lot easier if you know the best price before you walk out the door. The site also sends "savings alerts" directly to your inbox.

Date Night on the Cheap! Movies

With theater tickets on the rise, more and more people can not afford to go out to see a movie.Throw in popcorn and drinks and you have an expensive night.

Even with the exorbitant prices theaters are charging these days, there are still ways you can see a great summer blockbuster on the cheap!

Look for Deals

Entertainment books always have coupons for movie tickets. Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Theaters have coupons in the book. Regal is offering buy 2 tickets for $6.50 ea. AMC is offering one ticket for $7.50
.

Costco- Need I say more. Regal Entertainment Group- Buy 5 Tickets for $37.50. $7.50 a ticket for a savings of $2.00 per ticket. They also carry AMC and Cinemark.

Matinees

Of course the best way to find a cheaper movie ticket, if you have the flexibility in your schedule, is to go during the day when you can get a matinee price. This can be a substantial savings, but since many theatres are shortening their matinee hours, check your local theatre’s times before you head out. For example: MJR's Matinee price for a Super Saver Show before noon on Fri, Sat. & Sun. $4.00. Twilight shows are $4.50 daily from 4-6 pm. Also Join their Rewards program for added bonuses. After accumulating so many points you earn free popcorn and movie tickets. Emagine Theater has $5.00 Matinees and they also offer many Dinner and a Movie Packages with some local restaurants.

Finally, check with your local, favorite theater for specials and promotions. See you at the movies!

Clipping Coupons!

You can save hundreds, even thousands a year by simply clipping coupons. You can start saving by starting with clipping those "Sunday" coupons from your local newspaper. There are also some coupon websites that you can print coupons right from your printer. Also there is a website that you can register your shoppers savings card and it will automatically take off "coupons" for certain things that you buy. www.coupons.com

1. Start by looking at the stores circular for things like chicken breast 50% off. Plan a few meals around the sale items that you buy.
Have a "complete" list so that you do not buy unnecessary things. Be "store flexible" shop at the stores with the best sales for the week.

2.Look for sales on the coupon items. Many stores will put the item on sale the week that the coupon is out.

3.Go through your grocery list and put a star next to any item for which you have a coupon. Make a note of the specific brand and any special requirements (ie, must buy 2) next to the product. Immediately after you put the item in your cart, pull your coupon from your file and place it somewhere you won't miss it (the front of your file, your pocket, your cart). When you go to check out you'll have all your coupons together. This way you won't be stuck looking through a pile of clipped coupons while you're rushing to pay and risk missing one.

4. www.shortcuts.com
  • Take advantage of frequent shopper cards that offer discounts or bonus savings. My local Kroger lets me swipe my Kroger Card at the register, so I can receive additional, unadvertised coupons — mostly on items that are already on sale that day!
  • Use coupons on double coupon day if your store offers it.

5.Typically, buying the smaller size when on sale and with a coupon, results in the biggest savings.

Storing Coupons

Inexpensive Containers - There are plenty of coupon organizers on the market today but all you really need is a simple basket or box with some index cards for dividers. Here are a few of my favorite ideas for inexpensive containers to store your coupons in…

* Gallon size plastic zip bags: I like using these because they’re clear and you can see your coupons at all times – sometimes out of sight means out of mind!

* Recycled envelopes: FREE! Instead of tossing out all those crisp clean reply envelopes (others may think of as junk mail), tuck the flap inside and use to store your coupons. This is great if you don’t have many coupons to store.

* Recycled shoe boxes, diaper wipe containers or empty food boxes: FREE! These are great because they won’t cost you a penny and have plenty of room to store hundreds of coupons.

Index Dividers – You can either purchase index dividers from an office supply or discount store, or make your own, as I did.

* Store bought dividers: Alphabetical and numerical index card dividers can be purchased and either used as is or adapted for coupon categories.

* Making your own dividers: FREE! Just about any type of large index cards or heavy card stock paper will do. You can even cut out cereal boxes and make your own sturdy dividers completely for free.

* Labeling your dividers: FREE! Make a list of the coupon categories you’d like to have in your coupon file, such as Breakfast Items, Coffee & Tea, Frozen Foods, etc… in alphabetical order. Then either label or print your dividers with these categories.

Initially, organizing your coupons may take a few hours, but it will help you save precious time (and money) each week. And by getting your coupons organized and ready to use, you’ll be on your way to saving in no time!!!

Bob Evans-Lunch and dinner starting at $5.99. Bob Evans is already offering knife and fork sandwiches as well as its newly famous deep-dish dinners that kick off at $5.99.

Ruby Tuesday-Lunch or dinner, burgers starting at $5.99.

Hooters- Lunch and dinner, $5.99. Hot on the heels of their $1 draft beer bailout Hooters is offering an economic stimulus package full of wings. Every Wednesday Hooters will offer a 10 piece Boneless wing combo served with a side of fries and a roomful of delightfully tacky décor all for only $5.99. Apparently you are going to Hooters for the wings -- or at you should be!

Arby's Quizno's and Subway- For the most part, Subway has led the battle with a slew of $5 foot-longs and a rotating menu of 6-inch subs for $2.50. Not to be outdone, Quiznos has fired back with $2.99 subs and raised the stakes with low-priced Sammies. Arby's was a late comer to the toasted sub war but fought back with $5 combo meals that are often cheaper than its rivals for a full meal.

Let's Make Some Money and Declutter!

Turn your trash into cash!

If you are cleaning out your closets, the garage or the basement this spring, don't just dump it.
You can sell your stuff and make some extra cash.

Secondhand shops:
Play It Again Sports, Game Stop (video games and consoles), Plato's Closet (teen and young adult clothes and accessories), and Music Go Round (instruments) will pay you for your used items. Check the chains website for the closest location and call before you head out.

Another way to make some cash is to go online.
www.ebay.com, www.craigslist.org, www.amazon.com, www.gazelle.com and www.backpage.com.
Check with each site for terms and fees. Craigs List and Back Page does not charge a fee to list.

Have a Garage Sale:
You could bring in $500 - $1500 for a weekends worth of work. Sub-division sales are great, they cost less and there are multiple homes participating. Therefore more traffic.

www.internetdrugcoupons.com. This site has hundreds a current coupons for prescription medications, non-prescription drugs and pet medicines. Details are listed on each coupon.

  • Amoxicillin
  • Cephalexin
  • SMZ-TMP
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Ampicillin
  • Penicillin VK
  • Erythromycin
Meijer's also offering free Pre-Natal vitamins.

Target and Walmart are offering $4.00 co-payments on Generics for a 30 day supply and $10.00 for 90 days. Contact Target and Walmart for complete details.

Warehouse Clubs...Deal or Not!

Warehouse Clubs can result in great deals from a Dell Laptop to 36 bottles of spring water. But that does not mean that every product in the aisles of Costco, BJ's or Sam's Club is always a good deal.

Here is what I have found.
Alcohol, milk, butter, eggs, meats, electronics and prescription medicines are great deals. For instance prescription medicines are routinely 50% lower than drug store prices. The meat department in these clubs are top notch butcher shops with supermarket prices. I buy my meat in bulk and split it into freezer bags for several meals.

The Not so Good Deals.
Toilet paper, paper towels, especially recently have skyrocketed at local clubs. I found Charmin 36 roll for $20.99 at Costco, that is over 58 cents per roll. I would keep your eye out for sales at Target and Walmart combined with a coupon, you will get a better per roll price.

Designer clothes , not such a good deal. I have found that stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls have a better selection and better prices.

I found a pair of men's Perry Ellis dress pants at Costco for $19.99, the same pants at TJ Maxx were marked down to $14.99. Watch those sales and clearance deals!

Can you justify the cost of the warehouse club membership? At $40- $100. It all depends on the size of your family, how much you will be buying per trip and do you have any big ticket items that you will be purchasing during the year.

I have saved a ton of money at Costco. I have made most of my big ticket item purchases there. For instance last year we bought all of our pool furniture and a Plasma TV. Literally, saving hundreds of dollars and getting $200.00 back from their rebate. My membership pays for itself.

A good way to try it out is to take advantage of the"free pass" days that many of the clubs offer throughout the year. This allows you to check out the club and even make a purchase. Also keep in mind if you buy a membership at any time you can request a refund on the unused portion if you are not satisfied.

Let's Go Shopping!

Here are some of my top site recommendations for price comparisons and local sales.

If you already know what you want to buy, here are the sites to "price compare".
www.pricegrabber.com,www. nextag.com, and www. shopping.com. Type in the item name, number etc. and it will find the best price for you.

Now if you want to know all the sales in your area like Target, K-Mart etc. This site is for you, especially if you do not receive the newspaper. www.shoplocal.com. All you do is put in your zip code and the site displays all sales in your area. It is great!

Energy Costs

REDUCE YOUR WATER TEMPERATURE,
Hot-water heaters are typically set at 140 degrees (look for a temperature dial like your oven's), but 120 degrees is sufficient for killing bacteria everywhere but your dishwasher--and most modern dishwashers heat their own water anyway. You shave off 3 percent of your monthly bill for every five degrees you lower the temperature, says Hunt. According to the Energy Information Administration, the average monthly electric bill is $73, so
you save around $9 a month.

CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT.
For every degree you raise the temperature in summer and lower it in winter, you'll save 1 percent on your monthly bill. Keeping the house five degrees warmer or cooler can save around $4 a month.

PUT YOUR WATER HEATER ON A TIMER.
You can turn it off during the day and night when you're either away from home or sleeping. Get a timer at any home-improvement store and ask your electrician to install it. Using heated water for five hours instead of 24 can save you up to $20 a month.

REPLACE INCANDESCENT BULBS WITH FLUORESCENT ONES.
Fluorescent bulbs are a bit more expensive (about $6 to $7 each versus $1), but last up to seven years and cast a more flattering glow than they used to. Over its lifetime, a typical fluorescent bulb will save you over $50 in replacement and electricity costs.

Toy Rental

Save money, rent toys! I found this great site today that is a must for parents with little ones. This site rents toys. You sign up for a plan that is right for you. Plans start at $26.99/month. This plan gives you 5 toys every 60 days. It includes shipping both ways. Toys come within 5 days and are cleaned and sanitized. All toys are also teated for lead. This saves money on purchasing new toys and keeps these toys out of the land fill.
